Legendary Answers for Longtime Players

This update is for all the long time Maximum Apocalypse fans out there!

I want to start off by saying that we will be offering a $5 credit to anyone who has backed one of our previous Kickstarter campaigns. This credit will be applied in our pledge manager post campaign.

Maximum Apocalypse was only the second board game that I designed. I’ve grown a lot as a designer and as a publisher since then.  We have been working on Wasted Wilds for a long time and are lucky enough to have been able to share a lot of ideas with online fan groups that have helped us shape the game.  These great community members and longtime players have also asked lots of questions along the way, so I thought it would be nice to do my best to answer some of the most common questions I’ve seen leading up to this Kickstarter:

How do I pledge for “All the New Stuff”?

If you’re a longtime player (or own the Legendary edition) looking to back for All of the New Gameplay stuff, you can pledge for the ALL THE NEW GAMEPLAY GOODNESS if you want everything bundled together in one pledge. You can pledge for Wasted Wilds and then select the following add-ons on Kickstarter:

  • Time Traveler Expansion
  • The Few and Cursed Expansion

Please note that the Artbook is not offered in this pledge.  If you'd like that you need to select it as an add-on.

The other new products offered as part of this Kickstarter are the Artbook, new play mats and the Allies of the Rapture expansion.  The Rapture expansion is for those players that picked up Gothic Horrors in retail and missed all those stretch goals.

Is Wasted Wilds compatible with all the previous games/expansions?

The TLDR answer is Yes, but I do want to go into a bit more detail:

Survivors:

Survivors from Maximum Apocalypse, Kaiju Rising, Gothic Horrors and Jurassic Perils are all fully playable in this game. Plus any of the new survivors from Wasted Wilds can be played in the other Maximum Apocalypse games as well!  The only real change here is that the original game 4 years ago didn’t have miniatures, so for this game we’re including standees and miniatures for each Survivor.

Map Tiles:

For Wasted Wilds, we are introducing indoor/outdoor tiles.  Indoor tiles have a house type icon on them and our older tiles did not.  There is the problem that if you wanted to use old map tiles AND the new exposure mechanics which relies on indoor/outdoor locations, you’re going to need to remember which tiles are indoors.  Many of these older indoor tiles (Police station, gas station, factory) are included in Wasted Wilds with a different monster spawn number, but we will also publish a PDF list of older tiles that are considered indoors so that there is no confusion when you use older tiles.

Scavenge Deck:

The Scavenge Deck has been completely redesigned/simplified to be easily organizable and color coded.  You cannot use the new scavenge decks with the old mission cards. Many of the old missions had special items etc. that have been cut from the new scavenge decks.

Mission Format:

There are no mission cards in Wasted Wilds and we have transitioned everything over to a more detailed format better utilizing objective tokens:

This means that you’ll use the same map tiles for each campaign (no resorting!) and the same Scavenge deck for every mission in the game.

Can I add Exposure, Tribes and or the clock board to the old missions?

Yes. As I mentioned above, Exposure is a bit trickier because you will need to note which old tiles are indoor tiles.  For the most part, it matches the theme/picture of the tile, but we will have a list.  You can easily shuffle Tribes into the monster decks of old missions and the clock board is modular so it can easily be added to any mission.

Will Everything fit in the Legendary Box?

TLDR: GameTrayz estimates that the Legendary Box can easily fit ~1500 cards with the trayz and tiles in the box.  The Legendary version has ~860 cards and the new content adds ~426 cards so there is still room for additional SG content and sleeves.

We did our best to estimate the card and component counts of Wasted Wilds when we did our Legendary Box Kickstarter over 2 years ago. We even gave ourselves plenty of wiggle room on card count when we sent the guesstimated totals to GameTrayz to design the Legendary box.

Here is a rendering of how everything is designed to fit in the box:

Now the caveat here is that you will be replacing the old scavenge tray and component trays with the ones included in Wasted Wilds. One of the first things GameTrayz wanted to do was tweak/improve the trays we would be reusing in the Wasted Wilds box because they’ve learned a lot in the past 2+ years as well.

A few caveats:

  • More cards/content may be unlocked via Stretch Goals
  • All the renderings above are done with unsleeved card dimensions. We know that sleeved cards take up more space, but how much more space depends on the brand of sleeve.
  • While we did our best to stay within our original estimates, the Few and Cursed Expansion (90 cards / 8 tiles) was not included in our original estimate 2 years ago. There is a spot for the Redhead miniature in the Wasted Wilds minis tray along with spots for standees:
Wasted Wilds miniature tray holds standees and exposure decks

Space Saving Suggestions:

  • Removing the old scavenge cards (94 cards) will free up more space.  Our design goal is to move away from sorting and dealing with the old scavenge decks. The new scavenge deck can be entirely stored in the Scavenge Tray.
  • GameTrayz estimates that you can store ~3200 cards in the legendary box without the trayz stored inside.

Finally, I would just like to add that we are designing the Wasted Wilds box to be an excellent storage solution whether you are a new or old player. The Wasted Wilds box will be about 33% smaller than the Legendary Box (or 2x bigger than the Gothic Horrors or Base game box) and will include instructions demonstrating how to organize your box before your first play.

If you have any additional questions, I will be sure to keep the FAQ updated.
